This is getting ridiculous. Or maybe just sad.
The calendar has turned the page to June and the Yankees still have a Hitting Problem. A Major Hitting Problem. It’s one thing for a team to run into a bad stretch and call it a slump. It’s another for the slump to last as long as it has. There are players who are simply underperforming, which is frustrating because the pitching, for the most part, has been just fine. The bullpen imploded in the finale yesterday against the Blue Jays, but it wouldn’t have mattered. The Yanks either get shut out completely or strand a ton of baserunners.
What to do about it?
A) The Yankees could fire the hitting coach but what would that prove? B) They could fire Girardi but he can’t hit for the players and I don’t sense that replacing him would make much of a difference. C) They can simply limp along this season, wait till the big-salaried players are off the books and then go shopping. D) Or they can suck it up and decide to rebuild with young players, knowing it’ll be a few years before they contend again.
With a large stadium to fill and revenue to collect, I’m doubtful about option D and am more inclined to buy option C.
Or maybe they’ll make a trade for one player – a bona fide slugger – who will galvanize the offense.
Meanwhile, on to today’s makeup game in Detroit.
